Mr Remon Keriakos
Consultant Gynaecologist
Mr. Remon Keriakos is a highly respected consultant in obstetrics and gynaecology with over 30 years of clinical experience. He is the founder of the Sheffield Perineal Repair Course, which he established in 2002 as the second UK-based course dedicated to teaching the advanced techniques of perineal repair. Throughout his career, Mr. Keriakos has made significant contributions to medical education, research, and clinical practice, particularly in the area of perineal tear repair.
The Vision Behind the Sheffield Perineal Repair Course: In 2002, Mr. Keriakos recognised the need for high-quality, hands-on training for healthcare professionals involved in perineal repair. His vision led to the creation of the Sheffield Perineal Repair Course, a pioneering program that equips delegates with the essential skills needed for effective 3rd and 4th degree tear repairs. Under his leadership, the course has grown to become a key training ground for healthcare professionals, helping them improve their surgical and clinical skills.
Innovative Contributions to Medical Education: Mr. Keriakos is also the creator of the “Keriakos Trainer,” a unique educational tool designed to teach the principles of perineal tear repairs. This innovative trainer enables participants to practice and refine their skills before progressing to the animal tissue model (pig perineum). The Keriakos Trainer is integral to the course, enhancing the learning experience by allowing delegates to gain confidence and competence in a controlled, realistic environment.
A Legacy of Training Excellence: Throughout his career, Mr. Keriakos has trained over 1500 delegates, offering them the opportunity to learn cutting-edge techniques in a supportive, hands-on environment. The Sheffield Perineal Repair Course has become renowned for its thorough, evidence-based approach to teaching, and Mr. Keriakos’ guidance has been instrumental in shaping its success. He led the course as its Director until his recent retirement from the NHS, after a long and impactful career at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals.
Professional Expertise and Achievements: Mr. Keriakos has been at the forefront of research and development in obstetrics and gynaecology. He has authored over 30 book chapters and peer-reviewed papers, and has presented his findings at numerous national and international medical meetings. His expertise in the field has made him a sought-after peer reviewer, having reviewed over 70 research articles for more than 18 international journals.
His leadership extended beyond clinical practice, as he served as the Chair for the British Society of Biopsychosocial Obstetrics and Gynaecology Association (BSPOGA). In this role, Mr. Kariakos organised and chaired workshops and meetings at prestigious conferences such as the RCOG World Congress and the International Society of Psychosomatic Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
Retirement and Continuing Legacy: After a distinguished career, Mr. Keriakos retired as a consultant from the NHS, but his commitment to medical education and research continues to resonate through the Sheffield Perineal Repair Course and the many professionals he has trained. His contributions to the field will continue to influence the future of perineal repair training and the broader field of obstetrics and gynaecology.
He continues to support the department with both clinical and educational activities.
A Personal Message from Mr. Keriakos
“It has been a privilege to guide so many talented professionals through their journey in perineal repair.
